The Down East region of Maine is a major destination
in Maine for summer travelers, as it is home to
Acadia National Park. Millions of visitors arrive
each year. However, aside from the park, there are
lots of there area attractions, from mini golf parks
to antique museums. Below is a brief introduction
to some of what Down East Maine has to offer.

Bangor Area: |

Cole Land Transportation Museum:
Easily accessible from I-395 in Bangor, this museum
features a good collection of antique trucks, accessoeries
and more.

Paul Bunyan Statue:
| Located on Main Street in front of the the Bangor Auditorium, and directly accross from the new Hollywood Slots Casino.
This 31 foot tall, 2-1/2 ton statue recognizes the history
of Bangor as the former lumber capital of the world. |

Hollywood Slots at Bangor :

Maine DiscoveryMuseum :
Located on Main Street in the old Freeses department store, the Maine Discovery Museum is the largest children's museum north of Boston. Regular Museum Hours

Natural History Museum:

Kebo Valley Golf Club:
For over 100 years, Kebo has provided a challenging
and attractive championship course. Rich in tradition,
each hole has been carved into the mountains creating
spectacular scenery. Expert PGA staff on-hand, modern

Oceanarium & Lobster Hatchery
Located on Rt. 3, you'll enjoy the up-close experience.
Guided tours and the Maine Lobster Museum are available.
The working lobster hatchery is a fascinating look into
the life of lobsters. Combination tickets, group discounts
and tours available. Located 4 miles north of the park
entrance. Open Monday through Saturday. Call for more
information.

Blue Hill Area: |
|
Blue Hill Falls:
Located on Route 172, these are reversing falls. There
are also relics of Indian shell heaps.

Parson Fisher House:
Jonathan Fisher, the first settled minister of Blue
Hill, was a remarkable man. The parsonage which he built
in 1814 offers a fascinating picture of his many talents.
His library includes books on national history and poetry
written by him.
Route 176 / 15, just past the turnoff to South Blue

Bagaduce
Music Lending Library:
The Bagaduce Music Lending Library's mission is to collect,
preserve and lend printed music, and to provide music
education programs. We have grown to be a national resource
center for choral, instrumental, vocal and keyboard
music, both popular and classical, and for teaching
and reference materials.

This International Historic Site was settled
in 1604.

Visitors can take a tour through the academy's training
ship, the State of Maine.

Area: |
|
Barrack's Museum:
Offers an overview of Eastport''s prominence since Revolutionary
times.

Ellsworth Area: |
|
Stanwood Homestead & Wildlife
Sanctuary:
This 130-acre nature preserve are owned by the Standwood
Wildlife Foundation. The grounds include a picnic area,
gift shop and marked nature trails. Open daily 10a.m.-4p.m.,
June-October.

Woodlawn:
A Georgian-style mansion and built in the 1820's. Situated
along the Union River, it has a wonderful view across
the river. Guided tours are available between June 1
through October 15. |

> Lubec
Area: |
|
West Quoddy Head Light:
Located on the most easterly land point in the United
States. This area is lined with steep rocky coastlines.
During the migration season, it is not uncommon to see
whales passing offshore.
West Quoddy Marine Research Station:
Located near the Quoddy Head State Park, this research
facilities can help you learn more about whales through
exhibits, seminars, and films.

> Machias
Area: |
|
Fort O'Brien (1775):
Site of the first naval engagement of the Revolutionary
War. Overlooks parts of Machias Bay, in Machiasport. |

Burnham Tavern:
The oldest structure in eastern Maine, the Burnham Tavern
was built in 1770 as meeting place for local patriots
during the American Revolutionary War. It was restored
in 1907. Today, it is a museum of local history, operated
by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Southwest Harbor Area: |
|
Oceanarium:
Learn about Maine marine life. Tour more than 20 tanks
of resident wildlife. A lobster hatchery is also located
here.

Wendell Gilley Museum of Bird Carving:
Showcases the works of a local, nationally acclaimed
carver.

Stockton Springs Area: |
|
Fort Knox:
Located on the banks of the Penobscot River, this fort
was built in 1844 to protect citizens from the British.
Explore the forts many tunnel passageways. Bring a flashlight.
